Health advocates say that a lack of maternal services in South Jersey is preventing some women from getting the treatment they need. Cape May Regional Medical Center recently ended maternal and obstetric care “due to lack of obstetrical physician coverage.”

Programs like AtlantiCare’s Safe Beginnings are helping to provide more access. But, said Helen Hannigan, executive director of the Southern New Jersey Perinatal Cooperative, “One of the biggest issues” for families, especially in Shore regions, is transportation.
