Barbara May Scholarship
for Nurses

In honor of the extraordinary career of Barbara May, RN, MPH, the Southern New Jersey Perinatal Cooperative is pleased to offer the Barbara May Scholarship for Nurses.  This $5,000 annual scholarship is available to undergraduate and graduate students in New Jersey who are enrolled in a nursing program and who have interest in the specialties of community and perinatal health in New Jersey.

Background

Barbara May is a respected pioneer among South Jersey’s public and perinatal health professionals.

Barbara is the longest tenured staff member of Southern New Jersey Perinatal Cooperative, serving the Cooperative with dedication and integrity from 1985 to 2023.

Barbara earned her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Duke University in 1975. In 2004, Barbara attained her Master of Public Health degree with a focus on Public Policy from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Barbara made an indelible impression on her peers and the community during her public health nursing career. Those experiences would help shape statewide initiatives that are still in place today.

Through her tireless commitment, Barbara designed and implemented programs and strategies that address real needs and experiences of families and individuals.

Barbara’s clear vision for high quality, evidence-based programs that tie system level improvement with community and patient needs expand the impact of the Cooperative in South Jersey and beyond. Barbara serves as a mentor and champion for Cooperative staff, leadership in the New Jersey Department of Health, statewide hospital executives and partner agencies.

An avid skier and kayaker as well as a devoted mother and grandmother, Barbara’s love of the outdoors has taken her to Colorado for her next chapter where she is busy with the adventure of retirement.
