Lead & Healthy Homes

The family home is supposed to be a source of refuge and safety. Unfortunately, many South Jersey families live in houses that present unseen dangers. Hazards can range from lead-based paint and mold to pests and cleaning supplies, all of which have the potential to cause serious health problems.

Fortunately, families can take special measures to protect themselves from such hazards. Lead & Healthy Homes educates South Jersey families about these dangers and teaches best practices in lead poisoning prevention, green cleaning and home maintenance.

CHILDHOOD LEAD POISONING PREVENTION

High levels of lead in the blood can cause brain damage and permanent developmental problems in children. The most common source of childhood lead poisoning is the dust from lead-based paint. While lead paint was banned in 1978, much of South Jersey's housing stock had already been built. Lead and Healthy Homes helps families mitigate this danger by providing free lead testing kits and resources on lead-safe practices.

A blood test is the only way to know if a child has lead poisoning. This handy pocket guide explains the Blood Lead Level test results and the appropriate next steps.

  • Lead & Healthy Homes Lead Testing Kits

Lead and Healthy Homes provides free do-it-yourself testing kits to identify hazardous levels of lead dust in your home. If you live in a property built before 1978, it should be tested for lead dust. The Lead and Healthy Homes Lead Testing Kit is free, easy to use and can be completed in 15 minutes or less. The kit includes everything needed to collect samples and submit them to the lab.
