About the Program
Wipe Out Lead NJ (WOLNJ) is a statewide initiative to help expectant parents and families in NJ identify lead hazards in homes built before 1978. The program provides free home testing kits to screen for dangerous levels of lead paint dust the most common source of childhood lead poisoning.
The user friendly kit contains everything needed to test a home, including a pre-addressed, postage paid envelope to send samples to the lab. Results are available in a few weeks. All who return samples receive a $5 grocery store voucher.
Wipe Out Lead NJ is simply a screening program. Homes that test positive will need a more thorough assessment to determine the degree of risk as well as appropriate interventions.
Financial Help for Remediation
The program also assists residents and owners of lead-burdened properties apply for lead abatement state loans and grants.
To help homeowners and landlords eliminate lead hazards, the state of New Jersey is providing low-interest, deferred payment loans for home inspection and remediation costs. NJ property owners from all income levels may apply and all credit histories are considered. Some loans may be free to eligible applicants. The Wipe Out Lead staff can provide information about the loan program and help property owners complete the loan application paperwork.
