History

HMHB Coalition of Camden City began in 1985 with funding from the NJ Department of Health and Senior Services. Camden was among 15 cities identified as having a great need for a funding HMHB program.  In 1992 the NJDHSS directed the state funded HMHB Coalitions to merge with their local MCH Consortia. As part of this directive, the HMHB Coalition of Camden City joined the Southern New Jersey Perinatal Cooperative.

In 1997, on behalf of the Camden Coalition, the Cooperative received the first of three federal Healthy Start grants. The initial 4-year, $6.8 million initiative targeted adolescent services, perinatal substance abuse, male involvement, community building and barriers to care. It launched the Baby Cruiser van that brings care directly into the community.

In 2005, SNJPC was awarded its 3rd Healthy Start grant which is again under the direction of the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Camden City. The current program continues to use case management  as a primary strategy for lowering infant mortality rates. In addition, the Coalition will focus attention on improving the rate of early entry to care and reducing the number of babies that are born too small and too soon.

Awards

A highlight of the Coalition's annual meeting is to recognize extraordinary individuals and agencies. These are everyday heroes who inspire a community but consider doing a good job is reward enough.
