Myths & Facts about Perinatal Addictions

Below are common myths that have serious consequences:

MYTH: If I use early in pregnancy, there's no reason to quit because the damage is already done.

FACT: Anytime you quit during pregnancy will improve your chances of giving birth to a healthy baby.

MYTH: It is ok to drink wine while pregnant because it is not a strong enough drink.

FACT: Beer, wine and wine coolers are just as dangerous as other alcohol and drugs. A 12 ounce can of beer has the same amount of alcohol as a 1 ounce shot of hard liquor or a 5 ounce glass of wine.

MYTH: I used with my first pregnancy and the baby was just fine.

FACT: Every pregnancy is different. Alcohol and drugs may hurt one baby more than another. There is no guarantee that a child will not be affected. You may see problems as your child grows older.

MYTH: I am down to 2 cigarettes a day, so now my baby is safe.

FACT: Any cigarette smoke is harmful to a developing baby. Cutting down may not be enough. With fewer cigarettes you may inhale more deeply to get the same nicotine levels.
