Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalitions (HMHB Coalitions)
The Cooperative supports voluntary Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition in each of the seven South Jersey counties. The county Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalitions meet regularly to address the issues surrounding infant mortality in their communities. While the goal of each coalition is to reduce infant mortality, their strategies are often different. Projects undertaken by the different county coalitions include Momobile, Game of Life, and numerous health fairs and conferences.
In Atlantic City and the City of Camden, HMHB Coalitions are funded by the New Jersey Department of Health & Senior Services (NJDHSS). These funded programs include an outreach component designed to seek out pregnant women who are not receiving necessary prenatal care. In Atlantic City, HMHB works closely with the Cooperative's Infant and Fetal Development (IAFD) and Healthy Families - Atlantic County programs.
In 1997, the Camden City Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition received a four year, $6.8 million Healthy Start grant from the US Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB). The award has allowed the Coalition to quadruple the outreach staff, expand adolescent pregnancy prevention and substance abuse/risk reduction efforts, and expand Coalition membership by recruiting more consumers to help direct the program's initiatives.
