Incarceration, Underlying Trauma and Perinatal Stress

To deliver optimal care to the unique population of formerly incarcerated women, providers must understand that many former inmates present with underlying trauma. Many have suffered mental, physical, and sexual abuse in addition to the stresses of incarceration. Awareness of these underlying conditions is important for providers, especially when treating pregnant women and mothers who are former
inmates. This workshop focuses on the circumstances of incarcerated women, including the mental health and medical care services available to them in jail as well as the lingering effects of their incarceration on rehabilitative release efforts.
